# Advent calendar ideas for a friend: 24 small surprises

An advent calendar turns December into a countdown with a small surprise every morning. Making one for a friend costs less than you think, and it tells them you thought about them 24 times.

## What an advent calendar is

Advent is the time before Christmas, and an advent calendar counts it down: one door, pocket or box for each day from December 1 to December 24. The idea comes from Germany, where some families in the 1800s marked the days with chalk lines on a door, and the first printed calendars appeared there in the early 1900s. Today they hold anything from chocolate to tea bags to tiny notes.

## Pick a format

- **Envelopes on a string:** 24 small envelopes with numbers, pegged on a ribbon. Cheap, pretty and easy to post flat.
- **A box of little bags:** numbered paper bags in a shoebox, good for snacks and small objects.
- **Matchboxes:** perfect for notes, stickers and very small treats.
- **Digital:** a message, a photo or a song every morning. Free, and it works across any distance.

## 24 ideas, one for each day

### Little treats

1. Their favourite chocolate
One square or one small bar. The classic for a reason.
2. A tea bag or a hot chocolate sachet
Add a note: “for the coldest evening this week”.
3. A candy cane
Cheap, festive and fits in an envelope.
4. Their favourite crisps
A mini bag for a Friday.
5. A homemade cookie
Wrapped in baking paper and tied with string.
6. Popcorn kernels and a movie suggestion
   Tonight’s plan, in one bag.

### Notes and memories

1. A photo of the two of you
Print a small one, or draw a doodle of the moment.
2. “Remember when…”
One memory per note. These are the ones people keep.
3. A compliment
Something specific you admire about them.
4. A song for today
Write the title and why it reminds you of them.
5. A tiny challenge
“Text someone you miss”, “take a photo of the sky at 5 pm”.
6. A quote they love
Or a line from a film you both quote too often.
7. A thank-you note
For something small they did this year.

### Small objects

1. A sticker sheet
For their phone case or laptop.
2. Lip balm or hand cream
   December hands will thank you.
3. A hair tie or a clip
   Small and always useful.
4. A pair of fun socks
Save it for a bigger pocket.
5. A bookmark you made
Cardboard, a photo and a ribbon.
6. A mini puzzle or a deck of cards
Something to do on a lazy day.

### Plans and the big finish

1. A voucher for a walk together
   Or a coffee, on you.
2. A recipe to cook together
Plan the date when they open it.
3. A list of films for the holidays
Your top five, with one line each.
4. A letter
Save the longest note for the 23rd. Here is [how to write one that sounds like you](https://decomytree.link/blog/how-to-write-a-christmas-message).
5. Something bigger on the 24th
The one gift from their wish list, or a card that says what this year meant.

## Themed calendars

A theme makes shopping easier and gives the 24 days a story. Pick one that fits the person:

- **The puzzle calendar:** split a small jigsaw into 24 bags. The picture is finished on the 24th, and it can be a photo of the two of you.
- **The tea or coffee calendar:** a different tea bag or coffee sachet every morning, with a note on when to drink it.
- **The book lover’s calendar:** a short poem or a favourite quote every day, with a paperback behind the last door.
- **The self-care calendar:** a face mask, a bath bomb, a candle, a playlist for a long walk.
- **The reverse calendar:** instead of taking something out, put one thing in each day, like a tin of food or a warm pair of gloves, and give the box to a food bank or a shelter in good time (many ask for donations by mid-December).

## Keeping the cost down

The secret of a cheap calendar is the mix. If about half the doors are free (notes, memories, challenges, songs), a third are small treats and only a few are objects, 24 doors cost about the same as one ordinary present. Buy treats in a multipack and split them, and save the one bigger gift for the last door. For that bigger gift, our list of [cheap Christmas gifts for friends](https://decomytree.link/blog/cheap-christmas-gifts-for-friends) has twenty ideas.

## How to make an envelope calendar in an evening

1. Get 24 envelopes
Small coin envelopes or folded paper squares both work.
2. Number them
Stickers, stamps or a marker. Mix the numbers up for a treasure-hunt feel.
3. Fill them flat
Notes, photos, tea bags, stickers. Keep anything bulky for a separate box.
4. String them up
Peg them on a ribbon, or stack them in a box with a lid that says “open one a day”.

Posting it far away?

International post can take two weeks or more in December. Send it by mid-November, or go digital.

## A digital advent calendar for friends far away

Send one message every morning: a memory, a photo, a voice note, a song. Set 24 reminders on your phone so you never miss a day. Or ask a few friends to take turns, so the calendar comes from the whole group.

For the last door, there is a way to make their Christmas morning full: send them the link to a [Christmas tree](https://decomytree.link/create-tree) and ask everyone to hang a message on it. The messages stay sealed until December 25, so the countdown ends with all of them at once.

Make a tree for the last door

Create it, share the link with friends, and it opens on Christmas Day.

## Questions

### When do you start an advent calendar?

On December 1, with the last door on December 24. Some calendars follow Advent Sunday instead, which can start in late November.

### How much does a homemade advent calendar cost?

Very little if most doors are notes, photos and small treats. A homemade calendar can cost between 10 and 30 in total.

### What if I’m late and it’s already December?

Start on the day you’re ready and put the missed days in the first envelope, with a note saying you are catching up. Nobody minds.
