# Christmas decor ideas for small spaces and bedrooms

You don’t need a big living room and a two-metre tree to feel Christmas at home. In a small space, one focal point and a few warm lights do more than a whole box of decorations. Here is how to plan it, room by room.

## Start with one focal point

Small rooms look cluttered fast. Choose one place to carry the season, like a corner, a shelf or the wall above your bed, and keep the rest calm. Everything else just repeats its colours in small touches.

## Trees that fit

| Idea | Space it needs | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tabletop tree, about 40 to 90 cm (1.5 to 3 ft) | A desk, a shelf or a side table | Studios and bedrooms |
| Wall tree of lights, garland or washi tape | Only wall space | Dorms and renters |
| Bare branches in a tall vase | A corner of the floor | A calm, natural look |
| Shelf or ladder tree | A bookshelf or step ladder you already have | Showing ornaments without a tree |
| Potted rosemary or a small living pine | A bright windowsill | A tree you can keep after December |

## Bedroom ideas

- **Lights above the headboard.** A string of warm white lights along the wall over the bed is the biggest change for the smallest cost.
- **Seasonal bedding.** A plaid, red or deep green throw and two cushions change the room and pack away flat in January.
- **A garland on the curtain rod or window.** It frames the view and keeps the floor free.
- **A paper star in the window**, lit from inside with a small LED.
- **Cards on a string.** Peg the Christmas cards you receive on a line of twine across the wall.
- **A seasonal scent** from a pine or cinnamon diffuser, instead of an open flame next to fabrics.

## Studio and small living room ideas

- **Decorate up, not out.** Hang wreaths, stars and garlands so shelves and the floor stay clear.
- **Use the door.** A wreath on the inside of the front door greets you every time you come home.
- **Group, don’t scatter.** Three candles and some greenery on one tray look styled; ten small things across the room look messy.
- **Let a mirror double the light.** Put a string of lights or LED candles in front of it.
- **Pick one colour story:** green and gold, red and white, or natural wood and paper.
- **Bring the kitchen in** with a few sprigs of greenery in a jar and a bowl of oranges studded with cloves.

## Dorm and renter-friendly tricks

- **Adhesive hooks and putty** instead of nails, and instead of tape that peels paint.
- **Battery or USB lights** where sockets are scarce or extension cords are not allowed.
- **A washi tape tree** on the wall, hung with paper ornaments and photos.
- **A tension rod** across a window for hanging stars or snowflakes.
- **Read the rules first.** Many dorms and rentals ban candles, real trees or certain lights.

## Decorate in one afternoon

1. Clear the surfaces
Put away a few everyday things so the decorations have room to stand out.
2. Build the focal point
Tree, wall or window: set it up first, then step back and look.
3. Add warm light
Warm white lights in two or three spots make a room feel cozy at night.
4. Repeat the colours
Echo the focal point with a cushion, a candle or a ribbon somewhere else.
5. Add something personal
Photos from the year, cards from friends or a handwritten note on the wall.

## Budget plan

| Budget | What to get first |
| --- | --- |
| Almost free | Paper stars and snowflakes, branches from outside, cards on twine, oranges and cloves |
| Small | One string of warm lights and a throw blanket |
| Medium | A tabletop tree with lights, a wreath and two cushions |
| Bigger | A good pre-lit small tree, a lit garland and a set of matching ornaments |

## Keep it safe

In a small room, decorations end up close to beds, curtains and heaters, so a few rules matter more. US fire departments respond to an estimated 210 home fires involving Christmas trees every year. In tests by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, a well-watered tree did not catch fire from the same flame that set a dry tree alight.

- Water a real tree every day.
- Keep trees, garlands and paper away from heaters, radiators and lamps.
- Switch lights off when you sleep or go out.
- Throw away light strings with cracked or bare wires.
- Never leave a candle burning in an empty room; use LED candles near fabric and in dorms.

### If you have pets

The ASPCA advises securing the tree so it can’t tip over, covering the tree water, skipping tinsel and keeping wires, batteries and glass ornaments out of reach. Lilies in holiday bouquets are highly toxic to cats, and mistletoe and holly can make pets sick.

## Not much room, still plenty of Christmas

A small space is a good excuse to keep the season about people, not things. If you are spending it solo, here are ideas on [how to spend Christmas alone](https://decomytree.link/blog/how-to-spend-christmas-alone). And if there is no room for a big tree at all, you can still have one your friends decorate online.
