# The 3, 4 and 5 gift rules for Christmas, explained

Gift rules are simple limits that turn a long, stressful shopping list into a few clear choices. The best known says: something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read. Here is how each version works and how to make it yours.

## The 4 gift rule

The most popular rule gives each person four gifts, one from each category. It spread through parenting blogs and social media as a way to keep Christmas from becoming a pile of plastic, and it works just as well for adults.

| Category | For kids | For teens and adults |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Something they want | The toy they keep asking about | The game, gadget or treat they keep putting off buying |
| Something they need | New boots, a lunch box | A phone case, a good umbrella, a better pillow |
| Something to wear | Pyjamas for Christmas Eve | A hoodie in their style, gloves, warm socks |
| Something to read | A picture book | A novel, a comic series, a cookbook |

## The 3 gift rule

Some families give three gifts, after the three gifts the wise men brought in the Christmas story: gold, frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2:11). Many read the three as a guide:

- **Gold:** something precious they really want.
- **Frankincense:** something for the mind or spirit, like a book, an experience or a faith item.
- **Myrrh:** something for the body, like clothes, a bath set or cozy socks.

Three gifts also suits tighter budgets and families who want the day to be about time together more than unwrapping.

## The 5 gift rule

The 5 gift rule adds one category to the four: usually **something to do**, an experience such as tickets, a class or a day out. Some families choose **something to share** instead, like a board game for the whole house.

The fifth gift may be the most valuable one. In studies by Cindy Chan and Cassie Mogilner, people who received an experience felt more connected to the giver than people who received an object, even when they enjoyed the experience on their own.

For a partner, the five can be something they want, something they need, something to wear, something to read and something to do together. Here are [Christmas gift ideas for your boyfriend](https://decomytree.link/blog/christmas-gifts-for-boyfriend) that fit each box.

## Why fewer gifts can be better

- **Children play more deeply with fewer toys.** In a University of Toledo study, 36 toddlers played in a room with either 4 or 16 toys. With 4 toys, they played longer with each one and in more varied ways.
- **One good gift looks bigger than a gift plus extras.** Researchers call this the presenter’s paradox: people judge a bundle by its average, so adding a small extra to a big present makes the whole package seem less generous.
- **Less shopping, more time.** A short list means fewer trips, a clearer budget and more of December left for people.

## A filled-in example

Here is what one family’s list could look like with the 5 gift rule. Each line is one gift.

| Category | Maya, 9 | Her dad |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Want | The craft kit she circled in a catalogue | The speaker he keeps looking at |
| Need | Winter boots | A new wallet |
| Wear | Christmas pyjamas | A good pair of gloves |
| Read | The next book in her favourite series | A biography of his favourite musician |
| Do | A trip to the ice rink | A cooking class for two |

## Common mistakes

- **Treating the categories as a minimum.** The point is fewer, better gifts. Four big presents can cost more than a pile of small ones.
- **Letting “need” become boring.** A need can still feel special: the nicest version of something they use every day.
- **Forgetting the other givers.** Grandparents may want to give more. Offer them a category, or the fifth gift, instead of a flat no.
- **Changing the rule on Christmas Eve.** Children notice. Decide early and keep it for this year.

## How to use a gift rule

1. Choose your version
Three for a tight budget, four for balance, five if you want to include an experience.
2. Write one line per category
For each person, jot one idea in each box before you shop. The gaps show you exactly what is missing.
3. Set a budget per person, not per gift
The “want” gift can take most of it; the “read” gift can be a second-hand find.
4. Ask for hints
People tend to like the gifts they asked for. A shared wish list helps everyone, especially grandparents.
5. Decide the exceptions together
Stocking fillers, a gift from Santa or a group present can sit outside the rule. Agree on it before December, not on Christmas Eve.

## For friends, partners and big families

- **Friends:** four gifts is too much for most friendships. Pick one category per friend, like something to read, and keep it small. See our [cheap Christmas gifts for friends](https://decomytree.link/blog/cheap-christmas-gifts-for-friends).
- **Partners:** five small gifts make a sweet countdown through December, one every few days.
- **Big groups:** a [Secret Santa](https://decomytree.link/blog/secret-santa-rules) does the same job for a crowd: one better gift each instead of many small ones.
- **Kids with many relatives:** share the categories with the family so presents don’t overlap.

## The part no rule covers

Whatever rule you use, a few lines on why you chose each gift make it personal. Our guide on [how to write a Christmas message](https://decomytree.link/blog/how-to-write-a-christmas-message) shows how in four short lines.
