# How to write a Christmas message that sounds like you

The messages people keep are rarely the long ones. They are the ones that could only have been written to them. Here is a way to get there in four short lines.

## Why most Christmas messages sound the same

“Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!” is friendly, but it could be sent to anyone, so it says little. What makes a message feel warm is detail: a name, a moment you shared, something you noticed about them this year. You don’t need to be a writer. You need one true thing.

## The four-part message

1. Start with their name
It sounds obvious, but it changes the tone at once. “Hey Sara,” already feels like a letter and not a broadcast.
2. Add one specific memory
Pick one moment from this year: the trip, the late-night call, the time they covered for you. “I still laugh about the bus in July” is worth more than any adjective.
3. Say what they mean to you
One plain sentence is enough. “You made this year so much easier” or “I’m really glad we met in that class.”
4. End with a wish for them
Not a generic one. If they’re starting a new job, wish them luck with it; if they’re tired, wish them a slow, quiet holiday.

Keep it short

Four lines fit on a card, in a text or on a gift tag. If you have more to say, say it in person.

## Examples you can make your own

Swap the details for your own; they are the part that matters.

### For a best friend

“Ana, this year had a lot going on, and you were there for all of it. I still can’t believe we made it to the concert with ten minutes to spare. Thank you for being my person. I hope your Christmas is as loud and happy as you are.”

### For a friend you see less often

“Hi Leo! I thought of you when I walked past our old café last week. I miss our long talks there. Let’s make a plan in January. Have a lovely Christmas with your family.”

### For a parent

“Mum, thank you for every lift, every late dinner kept warm and every call that started with ‘just checking’. I notice more than I say. Merry Christmas.”

### For a teacher or a coach

“Thank you for your patience this term, especially with my essays. Your feedback really helped. I hope you get a proper break over the holidays.”

### For a classmate or a teammate

“Group projects with you are the best ones. Thanks for always sharing your notes. Have a great holiday, see you next term!”

## For harder moments

Some messages are harder to write. Make them shorter, not longer, and let one honest line do the work.

### For someone who had a hard year

“I know this year asked a lot of you. I don’t have perfect words, but I’m here, in January too. Wishing you a gentle Christmas.”

### For a friend you drifted away from

“I found a photo from your birthday picnic and smiled for a full minute. I miss you, and I’m sorry I went quiet. Merry Christmas. I’d love to catch up.”

### For a new friend

“We only met this autumn, but it already feels like longer. Thanks for all the laughs at practice. Have a great Christmas!”

## Card, text or voice note?

| Format | Best for | Tip |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Handwritten card | Family, teachers, close friends | Write a draft on your phone first, then copy it out slowly. |
| Text message | Friends you talk to every day | Send it on its own, not as a reply buried in a long thread. |
| Voice note | Friends far away, grandparents | Keep it under a minute and say their name first. People can hear a smile. |
| A message that waits | Anyone you want to surprise on the day | Write it early, so it is ready to arrive on Christmas morning. |

Writing the note for a Secret Santa gift? Keep it to two lines and sign it with a clue, not your name. More in our [Secret Santa rules](https://decomytree.link/blog/secret-santa-rules).

## A line in their language

If your friend speaks another language at home, one line in it shows real care: “Feliz Natal” in Portuguese, “Feliz Navidad” in Spanish, “Joyeux Noël” in French, “Frohe Weihnachten” in German, “Buon Natale” in Italian. In Türkiye, where the big night is New Year’s Eve, people say “Mutlu yıllar”. ## What to avoid

- Inside jokes that could look unkind to someone else reading over their shoulder.
- Bringing up something sad unless you know they want to talk about it.
- A long list of compliments. One honest one is stronger.
- Promises you might not keep. “Let’s meet in January” is fine; “I’ll call every week” is pressure.

## When you don’t know what to say

Start with “I remember when…” and finish the sentence. Most of the time, the rest of the message follows. If you’re still stuck, our [message ideas](https://decomytree.link/deco-my-tree-message-ideas) and [Christmas wishes](https://decomytree.link/christmas-wishes) are a good place to borrow a first line, and then you can add your own detail.

## Let it arrive on Christmas morning

A message read on the day hits differently. On Deco My Tree, friends hang gifts with messages on your [Christmas tree](https://decomytree.link/create-tree), and they only open on December 25, so every message is a small surprise on the morning itself.

## Questions

### What do you write in a Christmas card for a friend?

Their name, one memory from this year, one line about what they mean to you and a wish that fits them. Four lines are enough.

### How long should a Christmas message be?

Two to four sentences for a card or a text. Longer messages work better as a letter or in person.

### Is it okay to send a Christmas message to someone I haven’t talked to in a while?

Yes, and it’s often the one that means the most. Mention something you remember about them and suggest catching up, without pressure.
